Many Summer Days at Tiger Stadium
I grew up a huge fan of all sports. It was ingrained in us at a very early age. My father played college football, my sister was an all state basketball player and I played college baseball. To say that my family was crazy sports fans is an understatement. Some of my fondest memories growing up were of going to Tiger Stadium. My very first game with my father was when I was 6 years old. The game went into extra innings, 16 to be exact. My mom wondered what had happened to us because we were gone for longer then expected. This was obviously before cell phones. The pants that I wore that day became my favorite pants and for years I referred to them as my “16 inning pants.” My last experience of Tiger Stadium was a brisk day September 27, 1999. It was the last game at the grand old park. That covered approximately 30 years from my first game there until the last game. I would have to say that my favorite experiences of Tiger Stadium were those in the summer of 1994. My father was diagnosed cancer and was getting treatments very close to the park. With a heavy heart, I was able to take in a dozen games that summer with my dad, I will never forget that summer and the great times had at the Stadium. We had hotdogs, peanuts, drinks and some great conversations. Now, I’m married and my wife is a crazy sports fanatic. We have a 7 year old son who loves sports as much as his parents. We are down at Comerica Park several times a month. We have hopes that our son will cherish the experience with his parents as much as I did growing up.
